The Basics of Transportation Dispatch
You see semi tractor trailers moving freight day in and day out, but have you ever asked yourself how do they know where to go? Welcome to the world of a dispatcher. The average trucking dispatcher is called many things, things you can't say in polite company, but a less colorful name is "travel agent." The dispatch tells the truck driver where, when, and how. The why doesn't enter into it; a driver is there to pick up freight and move it to where it needs to go, simple as that. The dispatcher is given a list of loads he has to cover, and uses his trucking resources to cover those loads. What driver gets what load depends on, not only where that driver is, but how much he's already worked that day. Drivers can only drive (under current department of transportation rules) 11 hours before they MUST take a 10 hour break before they can drive again. There are exceptions to this rule, but they're detailed and very finely applied. Most drivers and dispatchers get confused, so it's best to just stick with 11 hours driving. Even if a driver is closer to the pickup time for a load than another, if that driver doesn't have the driving hours to deliver the load on time, that driver is worthless for that load. On time delivery is the key to customer service in trucking and a good dispatcher keeps that as his focus. |
